Quality control programme

Listening first, testing always

Our quality control programme succeeds through the professionalism of our workforce and direct communication with our clients. Communication means listening to the customer and focusing on their needs — new policies, instructions or specifications set the guidelines that ensure the quality of every roll we make or service.

Our quality control department works closely with the production floor to ensure all rolls conform to the highest standards and procedures. Years of experience, the dedication of our foundrymen and careful selection of high-grade tested raw materials ensure every roll leaving our lines is of the highest quality.

Inside a double-poured roll

Hard outside, tough inside

A double-poured roll is cast in two layers. The outer shell is hard and resists wear; the core inside is softer and tougher, so the roll takes shock loads without cracking. The chart shows the hardness from the surface to the centre.

Chilled shell

Core
35–45 Shore C
Cross-section of a double-poured roll: a hard outer shell around a softer core. Beside it, hardness from the surface to the centre: 70 to 85 Shore C in the shell, falling to 35 to 45 Shore C in the core. 30 50 70 90 CHILLED SHELL · 70–85 CORE · 35–45 SURFACE CENTRE SHORE C
Typical profile of a double-poured roll. Hardness in Shore C from our grade table; the depth of each layer depends on the roll and its grade.

Tested at every stage

Casting, machining, finishing — checked throughout

Regular quality checks and thorough testing are carried out during each stage of manufacturing. Microprocessor-based equipment tests composition, hardness and dynamic balancing; the data is stored and analysed regularly, ensuring rolls that are uniform in hardness and chill depth, with adequate ductility, high wear resistance and a consistent hardened layer.

  • Composition analysis

Microprocessor-based spectro analysis of every melt against the grade specification.

  • Hardness & chill depth

Shore hardness verified across the barrel — uniformity, chill depth and a consistent hardened layer.

  • Dynamic balancing

Rolls dynamically balanced at different RPM for smooth running at mill speed.

  • Ultrasonic & metallurgical

Grain size and microstructure tests after heat treatment; ultrasonic testing for internal soundness.

Machining & testing

Precision finishing to your drawing

Rolls that pass our tests move to the machine shop: high precision lathes, radial drills, boring machines, wobbler milling and grinding machines. Roll grinders with special concave and convex devices grind roll necks — tapered and straight — to very close tolerances, and every finished roll is checked for size before dispatch.

  • High precision lathes & roll grinders — necks tapered and straight
  • Special purpose milling for wobblers & driving ends
  • High precision boring — roundness & concentricity of bore
  • Hardening & tempering furnaces, microprocessor controlled
  • Stress relieving of special SG iron rolls
  • Groove cutting to customer pass design

Research & development

Research that shows in every roll

Our research and development work has produced rolls of high quality at reasonable prices, valued by customers in India and abroad.

Test certificates for composition, hardness and balancing come with every dispatch.
